MX-5 CUP Season 2 Round 2 Recap
on June 06, 2016
Round 2 of the MX-5 Cup Season 2 was just as exciting as the first. A lot of racing incidents culminating into late race battles.
UPDATE 6/7/16: Added driver interview with Hippie, and preview information for Le Mans.
The highlight of Round 2 was without a doubt, Race 1. Race 1, turn 1 started as many when the grid is so full. With 18 cars barreling down the straight, a major incident affecting many cars. Hard to point the finger as the cars went through 4 wide. Turn 1 was a preview of what was to come in turn 3 of “the esses”. See the highlights below to watch as Murphy’s Lawl was involved in a racing incident where he then spun and at least 4 other cars were involved in the incident.

Same incident on board with Maverick
Race winner Nightmare had this to say about the start of the race:
“The first 3 turns was a scene straight out of the movie, Twister. I had cars crashing behind me in turn 1, cars crashing in front of me on turn 2 and cars crashing all around me up through the esses. I'm not quite sure how I didn't get any damage, much less a scratch at all. After the dust settled it was a matter of regaining my composure and getting into a rhythm to chase down the top 4.”
Sums it up well.
On Board with Blonde in Turn 1
After the grid settled, a few intense battles happened throughout the race. Majong and Blood had a fierce battle swapping positions frequently. The back and forth eventually led to contact putting Majong in P7 and Bloot in P3.

We also saw a battle between Blonde, Beardy, Copper, and Mission. This was an intense battle between the 4 cars, keeping it mostly clean. Some of the best on track action yet this season. The final results for the podium were, Nightmare in P1, Beardy P2, and Blood P3.
Race 2 wasn’t as eventful. Lessons were learned from Race 1 it would seem. This being said turn 1 still caused a bit of action with multiple cars having contact. We caught up with Hippie after the race who was able to stay out of the turn 1 madness. This is what he had to say:
"I watched race 1 onboard with Maverick so I knew what to expect at the start of race 2. My goal was to have a nice clean race with no issues, which I succeeded for the most part. Had some fun racing with Willy for 10th. Looking forward to the 12 hour race this weekend. Looking like it's going to be a stacked field. Good luck to everyone who's racing in it."
The field settled and again we see some familiar faces up front. Nightmare in P1, Murphy’s in P2, and Insane in P3. As the week ends we echo what Hippie say and look forward to one of the biggest events of the year, Round 3 of the GSREC at Le Mans. Stay tuned and check out the preview for more information.
